The main goal of the Mobile Passport Control app is to simplify the process of traveling through U.S. Customs and immigration ports. Mobile Passport Control was initially launched in 2014 via a partnership between United States Customs and Border Protection and ACI (Airports Council International)/ACI North America to reduce passenger hassle and streamline customs officers’ administrative duties.

Available to American and Canadian citizens for free in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, Mobile Passport is easy to use and an excellent way to decrease paperwork and long wait times. All you need to do is download the app and begin the quick and simple application process. With no paper forms to fill out, you can complete everything electronically on your device for your application and for your trips. It allows you to type in your data from the plane, eliminating stops at Customs and immigration kiosks – and the need to touch any kiosk screens. Most airports and cruise terminals have booths dedicated to Mobile Passport app users where you can bypass lengthy lines.

As for security, the app is encrypted and protected when you input your personal information and when the app sends it to Customs and Border Patrol. You can also use a PIN (Personal Identification Number), touch pattern, or even face recognition setting for additional security. Once your information is reviewed, a barcode is sent to your phone that you simply present to the booth officer to scan.

Mobile Passport Control’s basic functions are free, so with just a few button presses, you can get set to travel without the hassle of paperwork, lengthy lines, or expensive fees (like Global Entry’s $100 price). If you upgrade to Mobile Passport Plus, you will be able to just snap a photograph of your passport instead of entering the information manually. The premium version saves your trip history from copying and pasting data easily on future forms. This app is not related to Global Entry or TSA Precheck in any way, and it does not replace the traditional passport altogether (you do need to have it along with the app), but it can save you a ton of time and aggravation.
